W. Duczko, Birka V: The Filigree and Granulation Work. KVHAA: Stockholm 1985.
Description
Conical silver mount decorated with twisted wire and granules, from Grave Bj581. Almost identical mounts were found in two male chamber graves at Birka - both near the skull, so were most likely the tip mount of a silk-covered hat. Follow this link for more information (leads to an external site). The high quality of the filigree and granulation suggest they were Slavonic products, probably made in the vicinity of Kiev. My copy is made by pseudogranulation - that is, casting in a mould, not by soldering on the decorations to a cone of thin sheet silver. So it is a fair bit heavier than the original one. Note - due to the weight (~60 grams) the price will vary according to the market value of silver, please inquire for the current price.
